Jalan Jendral Sudirman ("Jendsud") is the main shopping strip in Salatiga. These photos were taken in the 1950's.

04-1964. Straatbeeld Jl. Jend. Sudirman zuid (gezien van tegenover de GKI kerk). Op de oude foto rechts Toko Menara, die er nog is, maar verstopt achter een nieuw gebouw van twee verdiepingen. Links was een halteplaats voor lastpaarden annex marktje. Ook te herkennen - maar heel klein - het winkelgebouw dat je op foto 2 [hieronder] ziet.

03-1977. Straatbeeld Jalan Sudirman noord (gezien vanaf Tamansari, 1977). Links was een benzine-pompstation en terminal bemo. De bomen rechts staan bij de walikota in de tuin. Op straat een campagne-optocht van de PDI. Op de nieuwe foto is eigenlijk alleen de tuin van de walikota herkenbaar, en heel in de verte de helling van de Merbabu.

Taman Sari bus station

Salatiga's bus station was moved from Tamansari to Blotongan, and around yr. 2000 was moved again to Tingkir area. Today, Tamansari (and along Jl. Jendral Sudirman) is the heart of Salatiga's economy comprising of a new mall and crowded shops (google map link)

I'm not sure if those are esto or "borsalino" buses.

Pasar Salatiga (The Market)

Central market of Salatiga "Pasar Besar". There had been few fires and rebuilding of this market. Today it stretches through Jalan Jendral Sudirman and is very busy. In fact each morning the stalls would extend to the main road - which they need to clear at 7am.


This one is a later picture (in the 60's) just before the big fire.

"We hebben die maanden, dat we in Salatiga zaten, op een buitenpost in Setoegoer gelegen en van daaruit werden de patrouilles gelopen. Setoegoer was gedeeltelijk een tentenpost en gedeeltelijk met vaste onderkomens.. Wij sliepen in de huisjes. Ik weet dat de administrateur een tent had tegenover ons onderkomen."

Taken from this dutch site, the only information given is "Hotel Kalitaman te Salatiga. Een klein familiehotel waar ‘een vrouw die alleen reist beter op haar plaats is."

Kalau dilihat posisi gunung Merbabu ini seputar daerah rawa pening. Foto lukisan diambil dari sini. Penjelasan yang tercantum: "Indonesisch dorp met figuren bij een vuurtje, op de achtergrond een meertje"
